The Gulabi Gang fights bullies

In 2006 Sampat Pal Devi an impoverish woman living in the Banda District of Uttar Pradesh in Northern India, witnessed a man ruthlessly beating his wife. She tried to stop him and was beaten as well. The next day Devi and five women carrying bamboo sticks gave the abusive man a thrashing with their sticks. This was the birth of the Galabi Gang. Almost 10 years later the Gulabi Gang is known world-wide as the women who dress in bright pink saris and carry bamboo sticks.

Sampat Pal Devi with the Gulabi Gang

The Banda District of Uttar Pradesh is the poorest and most feudal district in India. Women suffer the dual oppression of gender and class. The Gulabi Gang fights abusive men and corrupt officials; they fight for the rights of women and the right of the poor.

"Protect the powerless from abuse and fight corruption to ensure basic rights of the poor in rural areas and discourage traditions like child-marriages" - The Gulabi Gang's vision
